How Oyasumi Was Created? The Story of Our Olive Candles
There are moments in life when something "clicks" and you know the course is about to change. For us, that moment was... the smell in the hotel reception. But let's take it one step at a time.
It was always first traveling their baby is candles
Before Oyasumi was founded, we already ran a business, unrelated to candles or fragrances. Instead, we were always drawn to travel. Definitely more by land than by plane – by car, slowly, without rushing.
We love this moment when we can detour off the main road, stop in a small village, pop into a local café, listen to the language, and look people in the eye. Along the way, we stop at viewpoints, by the sea, in the mountains, and in small towns where time flows a little differently, sometimes seeming to stand still.
From such trips, we always brought back not only photos and tons of souvenirs, but also… memories of smells. The aroma of coffee at dawn on an Italian terrace, the humid air after a storm in the mountains, spices from a small bazaar, the smell of old wood in a guesthouse we'd only visited once but still remember. Sometimes in the evenings, we'd think back to these places and say, "Do you remember what it smelled like there? (or quite the opposite :) )."
One hotel, one scent and one "lamp on"
Three years ago, during one of our trips, something happened that put all the pieces in place. We entered a hotel—nothing special, just an ordinary overnight stop on the road. But inside, there was a smell that immediately caught our attention.
We won't pretend we immediately knew what this composition was – we simply felt the breeze – that's it. Something warm, enveloping, a bit like a blend of cleanliness, hospitality, and the atmosphere of a given place. And at that moment, a light bulb went off in our heads.
In the evening, instead of relaxing after the journey, we sat in our hotel room with our laptop and phone, browsing the internet. We searched for the answer to the question: how can we combine travel, emotions, and scents into something tangible?
Why candles?
The choice of candles was pretty obvious for us. Scented candles had long been a staple in our home – we loved lighting them in the evenings when we wanted to wind down after a long day.
We thought that if we were going to tell travel stories, the best way to do it would be through scented candles – something that can transform the atmosphere of a home in minutes. Over time, scented wax melts and aroma burners were added, allowing you to play with the intensity of the aroma and test new compositions with small portions of wax.
This is how the idea was born, but from idea to product there was still a very, very long way to go.
From experiments to love at first… wax
At first, we didn't even consider olive wax. We started like most people do – with soy candles. Then we tested candles made with rapeseed wax, coconut wax, and various blends. Each had its advantages, but we still felt it wasn't quite "ours."
In the meantime, we learned everything from scratch: how to choose a wick, how specific fragrance compositions behave, how waxes react to temperature, why one candle burns perfectly and another not so well.
These were long evenings with notes, tables, burned (literally) tests and moments of doubt.
And then, somewhere online, we stumbled upon olive wax . It sounded a bit exotic, a bit like an invitation to another world. We started reading, but the literature was scarce. It turned out that no one was using this wax (apart from mixtures) either in Poland or on the old continent. So we ordered the first batch, did the first tests... and again, we had the same effect.
Olive wax perfectly complemented our love of the Mediterranean climate, history, and culture. There was something very coherent about it: olives, sun, sea, stone streets, and us trying to capture it all in glass.
This is how our first Oyasumi olive candles were created.
Learning, testing, tweaking… and more testing
There's no denying it – there's a long way to go from the first nicely scented candle to a product that can be sold to a customer with a clear conscience.
There was a stage when our apartment looked like a small laboratory. Tables were piled high with jars, wax samples, and notes like version 32B—cold throw too weak, version 51C—adjust the wick, don't mix this oil with that.
We tested olive candles in various conditions, spent hours watching how they melted, how they smelled after the first lighting, and how they smelled after the fifth.
Every week we learned something new. Sometimes something worked perfectly, other times we had to start from scratch. But little by little, it all started to fall into place.
Oyasumi – when a scent becomes a memory
At some point, we felt that this was no longer an after-hours project, but something that was gradually becoming the center of our professional lives. More fragrances inspired by travel, more olive candles, more scented wax melts for fragrance burners.
For us, each candle is a little story: about a specific place, an emotion, a moment that we want to preserve.
We started naming fragrances after journeys and the atmosphere of places that touched us. This way, a scent isn't just "pretty"—it becomes a one-way ticket to a specific memory.
This is how the Oyasumi brand grows – week by week, from idea to idea, from conversation to conversation. Meeting people at trade shows, fairs, and markets only reinforces this. When someone smells a candle and says, "Oh, that smells like vacation!" – we know we're on the right track.
And what next?
Today, Oyasumi is our main work, but at the same time, it's more than just a company. It's how we tell the story of the world we see from the car window on every road trip, our memories.
We still love the road, the little stops, the conversations with people, and observing how different places smell at different times of day. But now, when we return home, we not only remember those scents but also try to recreate them—in olive oil candles, scented candles, scented wax melts, and aroma wax burners that then find their way into your homes.
So if you ever light an Oyasumi candle and feel transported for a moment to another place, to the seaside, to a city you don't know yet, or to a memory you've almost forgotten - that's exactly what we meant.
This is how Oyasumi was created. From travel, from curiosity about the world, from a single hotel scent, and from hundreds of hours of testing how to capture memories in glass.
