Are Oyasumi candles safe for dogs?
For most healthy dogs , Oyasumi candles, made from 100% vegetable olive wax and burned in a well-ventilated room, will be a safe addition to the home environment. However, it's important to remember that dogs have much, much more sensitive noses than we do, so always keep an eye on your pet, don't overdo the scent, and don't leave the candle in a place where the dog has access but not fresh air.
Why are we even asking about the safety of candles around dogs?
For us, a candle means relaxation, soft light, and a pleasant scent. For a dog, it's a mix of new stimuli: an intense aroma, smoke, flame, something new on the table that begs to be sniffed up close and sooted.
There's also the added risk of chemicals – some candles, especially the cheapest paraffin ones, can release more soot and respiratory irritants when burning, which can be a problem for both people and pets. We say a firm NO to such candles.
Therefore, the question of whether candles are safe for dogs makes sense – but the answer depends on what kind of candles they are and how you use them .
What in candles can be harmful to dogs?
It's not that "candles are bad." It's more that some ingredients and some habits can be problematic.
1. Paraffin wax
Paraffin is a petroleum-derived product. When burned, it can release more smoke and volatile organic compounds than natural plant waxes such as soy, coconut, or other plant waxes.
For a dog with sensitive airways, allergies or asthma, this may be an additional burden.
2. Very intense, synthetic fragrance compositions
A dog's sense of smell is 40 to 100,000 times better than a human's. A scent that we find pleasant and subtle can be quite overpowering for a dog. Overly intense scents can cause:
-
sneezing, tearing,
-
the desire to escape from the room,
-
anxiety, yawning or hiding.
3. Some essential oils
Some essential oils (e.g., tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, cinnamon, citrus, pine, clove, ylang-ylang) may be toxic to dogs in larger doses or if ingested. We do not use these oils in our candles.
4. Usual risks
They are common, but worth remembering:
-
burns – if the dog wags its tail, knocks over a table or sticks its nose into a flame,
-
swallowed wax, glass jar or metal elements – may cause problems with the digestive tract.
What is the difference between Oyasumi candles?
Now specifically about us.
At Oyasumi, we design candles to be as gentle as possible for the home atmosphere – including the dog atmosphere:
-
Olive wax is 100% plant-based; we don't use paraffin. This plant-based wax burns cleaner than traditional paraffin candles.
-
Cotton or wooden wick, no metal cores,
-
Reasonable fragrance concentration – we use fragrances approved for candles and adhere to the concentration levels recommended for this type of product, as per IFRA/CLP standards. This means that the amount of fragrance released into the air during normal burning is limited.
-
No smoking torches when used correctly (wick trimmed, candle not in a draft), flame is stable and soot is minimal.
This doesn't mean the candle magically disappears from the air and doesn't smell good to your dog. It does, but:
-
the wax and wick are selected so that they burn as cleanly as possible,
-
the smell should be pleasant, not suffocating.
How to Burn Oyasumi Candles at Home with Your Dog, Step by Step
Habits are key. If you stick to these rules, you'll be doing a great deal for your dog:
-
Air the room
Burn candles in a room where you can occasionally air them out. This recommendation applies to people, not just dogs. -
Don't burn a candle right next to the bed
The dog should be able to move away from the scent. -
Less is better
It is better to light one candle in the living room than five candles at once in a small room for the entire evening. -
The candle is always out of reach of the mouth and tail
A tall chest of drawers, a shelf, or a table that the dog cannot reach is an ideal place. -
Do not leave a candle unattended
It's a fire safety rule, but with a dog it makes doubly sense – you never know when he'll suddenly decide to jump on the table because something smells nice there .
