When we think of Dalmatia, our first association is a long, nighttime car ride, the first rays of sunlight streaming through the window, the smell of warm air mixed with the aroma of herbs and sea. We're so eager to pack the car. Somewhere between Makarska, Brela, Tučepi, Trogir, or Split, you feel that unmistakable moment: Okay, we're here. We're back again.
It was from images like these, conversations with you, and our own trips to the Adriatic that the Memories of Dalmatia olive candle was born – a scented candle that smells like a Balkan vacation, lavender, citrus, a hint of hops, and a touch of hemp. A bit like Bałkanica encased in glass.
Where did the idea for the Memory of Dalmatia candle come from?
Dalmatia is, for many, a classic first trip to Croatia, a region to which Poles return year after year. Makarska, with the Biokovo Mountains descending directly into the sea, charming Brela, Tučepi, atmospheric Trogir, lively Split, Zadar, and, of course, the islands – especially Hvar , often called the lavender island, famous for its lavender fields and picturesque towns.
There are also those small, repetitive memories that come back to us most often: going out in the morning to buy fresh bread and burek, when you're hit with the aroma of herbs and warm stone, the first swim in the Adriatic Sea after an all-night journey, evening outings on the promenade, where the scent of beer, wine, citrus fruits and... herbs we can't always name, the laughter of the locals, spontaneous conversations, music from a nearby bar, partying until late, even though we were supposed to go to bed after just one glass.
We wanted to create an olive candle that would transport you to these very moments. Not just to the seaside, but also to the very heart of a holiday mood—a little unruly, a little playful, very Balkan.
This is how Memory of Dalmatia was created, an Oyasumi scented candle that combines lavender, hops, citrus and a delicate accord of hemp.
What does the Memory of Dalmatia olive candle smell like?
Imagine it's a summer evening in Croatia. You're sitting on a terrace somewhere between Dalmatia and the lavender islands. Several scents mingle in the air at once, and that's exactly how we created this composition:
Lavender – not sugary, not soapy, but more natural, like the dried lavender bouquets you see at stalls around Hvar or the Dalmatian coast. Perceptibly Balkan, soothing, with a slightly herbal dryness.
Hops – a soft, slightly beer-like, green note that evokes evening meetings over a local beer, somewhere on the promenade, in a small pub run by Croatians.
Citrus – lemon zest, orange zest, perhaps a hint of lime somewhere in the background. The aroma of cool lemonade or the first sip of a citrus-flavored wine, drunk while still wet after a swim in the sea.
A hint of hemp – as a green, slightly earthy backdrop, adds originality and a slightly "boho" character to the composition. It's not a dominant scent, but it is noticeable.
The whole creates an unusual blend of herbal and citrus , offset by the softness of hops. This isn't a classic lavender-scented candle, nor your typical citrus summer candle. It's more of an aroma: a Balkan evening + a beach after sunset + laughter, music, and conversations into the early morning hours .
Olive Candle = Olive wax, not soy wax
Like all our candles, Memory of Dalmatia is made with olive wax —an alternative to popular soy wax or paraffin. This is a conscious choice and something that truly sets us apart.
What this means in practice:
- we use 100% olive wax , without any paraffin or other waxes,
- we create each composition in safe, calculated concentrations - we calculate IFRA, safety data sheets, we do not "overdo it",
- each Oyasumi olive candle is made by hand in a small workshop , not on a production line,
- if the fragrance oil documentation says "stop" at a certain percentage - we stop before that limit, even if someone would say: "add more to make it smell stronger."
This makes Memories of Dalmatia more than just a summer lavender-scented candle. It's a small, meticulously crafted product, crafted with the help of dedicated people, hours of testing, and a wealth of memories from our own Balkan adventures.
Who is the Memory of Dalmatia candle for?
This candle is perfect if: you've ever driven to Croatia and still remember that first glimpse of the Adriatic around the bend; you love Dalmatia, the Makarska Riviera, Brela, Tučepi, Trogir, Split, or Zadar and miss that atmosphere a little out of season; you enjoy lavender , but in a more natural, herbal version, not overly sweet; you're looking for a scented candle that evokes vacations, the sea, wine, and laughter , rather than the classic "homey" scents. Or perhaps in the evenings you enjoy lighting a candle, pouring a glass of wine or craft beer, and simply reminiscing about your favorite trips; you appreciate candles that create atmosphere —not just with their scent, but also with the way their flame glows; you have a slight nostalgia for the Balkans and want to have at least a little piece of that relaxed atmosphere at home.
How can you best enjoy Dalmatia Memories at home?
To ensure your Memory of Dalmatia olive candle burns beautifully and for a long time, it is worth remembering a few simple rules:
-
plan the first burn so that the wax melts almost to the edges of the glass (usually 2.5–4 hours) – this will prevent tunneling,
-
Before each subsequent lighting, trim the wick to approximately 3–5 mm,
-
place the candle away from drafts – the flame will be more stable and the wax will melt evenly,
-
Treat lighting a candle as a small ritual : maybe after work, maybe on a free weekend, maybe in the evening when you're looking through your vacation photos,
-
If you want to enhance the "Balkan effect", add a bowl of olives, a glass of wine, a summer playlist playing in the background and... you can mentally pack for Croatia again.
Let Memory of Dalmatia be your personal shortcut to vacation, even when it's completely un-Adriatic outside.
