Are Candles Safe for Pets? The Truth About Oils and Wax | Oyasumi
A dog's nose doesn't lie. Why can "natural" candles poison your pet? A guide for responsible pet owners.
Your home is your pet's castle. You provide the best food, regular walks, and vet visits. But have you ever wondered what your dog or cat is breathing while you relax by candlelight? Animals' sense of smell is a superpower—dogs have up to 300 million olfactory receptors (humans have only 6 million), and cats can detect scents you wouldn't even know existed. What might seem like a subtle aroma to us might be a sensory uproar to them. At Oyasumi, we believe that luxury must go hand in hand with the safety of every household member—including those on four legs. Today, we debunk the myth of "safe essential oils" and explain why olive wax and controlled synthesis are the best choice for a home full of animals.
The Big Mistake of "Eco-Natural": Essential Oils and Toxicity
In the world of soy candles, there's a widespread belief that "natural essential oil" equals health. This is a dangerous oversimplification. Nature can be unforgiving. Many plant-based substances that are safe for humans pose a lethal threat to animals.
Cats are a classic example. Their livers lack certain enzymes (particularly those responsible for glucuronidation), which means they cannot metabolize many compounds found in essential oils.¹ Popular oils like tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus, and citrus can cause liver damage, seizures, and even death in animals with prolonged exposure. By purchasing a soy candle "loaded with nature," you could be unknowingly introducing a toxin into your home.
The Paraffin and Soy Problem: Soot That Settles on Fur
The second enemy is the quality of combustion. Cheap paraffin candles, as well as low-quality soy candles, tend to emit smoke. The soot released doesn't just dirty walls. Microscopic particles of carbon and tar settle on everything—including your pet's fur. Pets, in an effort to maintain their hygiene, lick their fur, introducing these contaminants directly into their digestive tract.
Soy wax, often derived from GMO crops and treated with pesticides, also has its drawbacks. While it burns cleaner than paraffin, it can still produce compounds that irritate the sensitive respiratory tracts of animals, causing sneezing or watery eyes.
Oyasumi Safety: Science in Service to Animals
At Oyasumi, we've made a conscious decision: we don't use raw essential oils . Instead of risking your pet's health for the "100% essential oils" label, we choose advanced synthetic blends .
Why is this a better choice for your dog or cat?
-
Toxin Elimination: In our laboratory, we are able to isolate fragrance notes, removing phenols and terpenes that are harmful to animals and that naturally occur in plants. We create a fragrance that smells like a forest, but without the resins that are toxic to cats.
-
Safe Concentrations (No UFI): This is our guiding principle. Our candles are formulated in safe and stable concentrations. You won't find any warning pictograms required by law for irritants (no UFI - Unique Formula Identifier required).² This means allergen concentrations are kept to a minimum.
-
Olive Wax – Absolute Purity: Our European olive wax burns virtually soot-free. The flame is clean, meaning no black dust will settle on your pet's fur.
What to choose for a home with pets?
If you have a sensitive pet at home, we recommend starting with products with a mild fragrance.
-
Flame alternative: If your cat likes to jump on furniture, open flames are always a risk (knocking over a candle, burning its tail). In this case, flames are the ideal solution. Oyasumi Fragrance Waxes Used in an electric or ceramic fireplace placed in a safe location. Olive wax melts at a low temperature, releasing fragrance discreetly, without the risk of burns.
-
A candle with a "clean" profile: Choose scents that aren't sharp or harsh. Our Olive Candle - Słodak Seniorita It's a subtle composition, associated with purity and peace, which won't overwhelm your dog's sensitive sense of smell, but will allow you to deeply relax.
Remember: keep an eye on your pet. If, after lighting a candle, your pet leaves the room, sneezes, or becomes restless, extinguish it and air out the room. At Oyasumi, we create products with the comfort of everyone in the household in mind, but the final judge is always the dog's or cat's nose. Choose wisely – choose safety proven by science, not fashion.
Footnotes: ¹ Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care , "Essential oil toxicosis in cats and dogs." Studies indicate that cats are particularly sensitive to phenolic compounds due to the lack of glucuronyl transferase. ² CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 . The lack of a UFI (Unique Formula Identifier) requirement on our candles is due to the fact that the mixture in the finished product is not classified as posing a health hazard within the meaning of EU regulations.
